There are a lot of automotive sensors and actuators available for designers to choose from. There are simple and common actuators and also more unique and special-purpose actuators too. The automotive sensors and actuators that are most frequently used in automation is exhaust driven ones.

Automotive Sensors and Actuators that are exhaust driven are expanded and pulled in by compressed air. Spring powered cylinders are available, but double-acting cylinders are usually used because they need double air lines instead of just a single. The electric automotive sensors and actuators retraction feature means more reliable operation rather then just relying on the exhaust system pressure. Air cylinders can be obtained with magnets in the piston heads, so that automotive sensors and actuators connected to the outside of the cylinder can detect piston extension or retraction.

Sensors work similarly to hydraulic actuators and valve choices are very similar to gaseous choices, except that the automotive sensors and actuators are more powerful, faster, and must be built to withstand more pressure. There is a much wider selection of hydraulic rotary automotive sensors and actuators than is the case with exhaust powered automotive sensors and actuators, because the high pressures used in hydraulic systems allow them to develop practical torque. The automotive sensors and actuators in the hydraulic system are not as sensitive to the automotive sensor and actuators used in the exhaust systems.

Automotive sensors or actuators that are exhaust-powered are sometimes used in an electronically powered system, the controller's output signals have to manage air flow. These systems are not as sensitive as the electronic ones and there for when it comes to performance and racing parts, the electronic automotive sensors and actuators are favored.
